5 Best UK Hikes
Helvellyn
Voted the best walk in England in the ‘largest ever survey’ of over 8,000 walking enthusiasts, Helvellyn in the Lake District hosts a wide array of scenic routes and rewarding walks. These routes range from Thilwere, considered the easiest to walk and stretching around 2 miles, to Striding Edge – widely regarded by hiking enthusiasts as one of the best hikes in the UK due to its unique topography, challenging terrain and Grade 1 scramble. Despite being a highly thrilling and rewarding walk, Striding Edge is frequently exposed to strong winds which make it quite dangerous in poor weather therefore we recommend it for experienced hikers only.
Fairoak Trail – Cannock Chase Forest
If you’re looking for a more relaxed walking experience then the Fairoak Trail may be the one for you. It is a 2.5-mile forest walk nestled in the heart of England and a great circular trail. Popular with walkers and cyclists of all experience levels, Cannock Chase also boasts the Fairoak Valley and Pools – a richly biodiverse and important habitat and ecosystem which leaves you with a high chance of spotting a plethora of wildlife – even a deer or two if you’re lucky!
Snowdon
Wales’ tallest mountain is also home to some of the very best walks in the UK. The Llanberis path is generally considered the most straightforward route up Snowdon, leading to it being the most popular. However, Llanberis is also the longest route – coming in at around 9 miles. So, for those who don’t mind a little bit of a challenge, we also recommend the other excellent Snowdon hiking trails – including PYG, Rhyd Ddu, and even Crib Goch, another exposed Grade 1 scramble (and one of the best hikes in Britain)!
Old Harry Rocks
Another more relaxed walk, this trail along a stretch of the Jurassic Coast in Dorset is a sight-seer’s paradise. With exceptional views of nearby towns, the coastline, and of course the Old Harry Rocks themselves, this 4 mile walk is sure to be enjoyable without being too strenuous.
The Lizard Peninsula
The Lizard Peninsula walk is an incredible trek along the Cornish coastline; from sandy beaches to stony cliffs, this walk is also adaptable to people of all experiences. You may wish only to stop at the must-see Lizard Point (the most southerly point of mainland Britain) or to embark on the full 7-mile stretch. Either way, you will encounter stunning views of the Atlantic, have a chance to stop at the lighthouse, and spot plenty of beautiful natural features along the way.
