What is robotic-assisted surgery?
Robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) is a form of minimally invasive surgery where the surgeon controls a high-precision robotic system to remove lung tumours or affected tissue. Despite the name, it is always the surgeon — not the robot — who performs the operation.
The technology provides enhanced 3D vision, improved dexterity, and superior precision, allowing surgeons to operate through tiny incisions and navigate delicate areas of the chest.
Why does this matter for people with lung cancer?
For suitable patients, robotic-assisted surgery can offer a range of benefits compared with traditional open surgery, including:
