Incidence
Lung cancer is the third most common form of cancer.
Over 49,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer in the UK every year. This equates to approx. 130 people every day.
Lung cancer is the second most common cancer for both men and women.
Approx. 28% of incidences are not caused by smoking. Other causes include air pollution (8%) and occupational exposure (13%)
Mortality
Lung cancer is the UK biggest cancer killer, accounting for over 34,000 deaths each year.
Lung cancer kills more people than breast, prostate and pancreatic cancers combined.
It also kills more women than breast and ovarian cancers combined.
Lung cancer accounts for 21% of all cancer deaths.
Every 15 minutes someone in the UK dies of lung cancer.
Survival
Approx. 10 in every 100 people diagnose with lung cancer will survive for 10 years or more.
Approx. 20 in every 100 people diagnose with lung cancer will survive for 5 years or more.
Approx. 45 in every 100 people diagnose with lung cancer will survive for 1 year or more.
75% of people diagnosed with lung cancer through screening are caught at early stage (1 and 2) when curative treatment is possible.
