A groundbreaking robotic-assisted procedure, recently trialled in the UK, has shown exciting promise in improving how lung cancer is diagnosed — potentially cutting down waiting times and giving patients clarity and treatment sooner.
The trial involved about 200 NHS patients whose scans showed suspicious spots — known as nodules — in their lungs. Clinicians used a system called the Ion endoluminal system to navigate a tiny robotic catheter deep into the lungs. The tool reached areas once thought difficult or impossible to biopsy.
They created a digital route map from each patient’s scan, similar to a GPS. This let doctors guide the catheter straight to the target.
Early results showed strong accuracy. Doctors confirmed diagnoses in about nine in ten patients. They placed the biopsy tool in the correct spot in almost every case.
Experts call this a major shift in lung cancer diagnosis. The system could shorten waiting times and help people start treatment sooner.
Accessing small nodules without delay
Professor Pallav Shah, a consultant respiratory physician on the trial, said the robotic approach lets doctors reach and sample very small nodules without delay. He called it a major step forward compared with the traditional “watch and wait” approach used for some suspicious findings.
“It allows us to be a lot more precise and accurate than conventionally we could.”
At times, patients with small nodules might otherwise wait months for repeat scans, adding stress and delaying care. With this new system, doctors can often complete biopsies quickly, and many patients go home the same day and get back to normal life.
Speeding up diagnosis
Kelvin Lau, clinical director and consultant thoracic surgeon, said the new technology could transform lung cancer screening. Detecting people early is only half the job. The real difference comes when clinicians can confirm if a nodule is cancerous and start treatment quickly, which is what saves lives.
“While lung cancer screening has made a huge impact in detecting nodules, this is only half the story — we need to know which of these nodules are cancerous so we can act on them quickly and efficiently, before the disease progresses.”
Paula Chadwick, Chief Executive at Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, welcomed the findings, stressing the importance of early, accurate diagnosis in improving outcomes.
“Early and accurate diagnosis is one of the most important factors in improving lung cancer survival, yet too many people still face anxious months of uncertainty while waiting to find out if a small nodule is cancer.
“These findings show the real potential of robotic-assisted bronchoscopy to change that experience for patients.
“By enabling clinicians to safely reach and biopsy small, hard-to-access nodules, this technology could help people get the answers they need much sooner — and, crucially, access curative treatment at the earliest possible opportunity. Innovation like this is vital as we work to diagnose lung cancer earlier and save more lives.”
Robotic-assisted bronchoscopy represents a promising leap forward in how lung cancer can be diagnosed in the NHS. Although teams must still carry out more research and roll the method out more widely, the breakthrough shows how powerful innovation can be and why pushing early detection remains vital.
