Lung Cancer Information Officer

We are looking for someone to take on the co-ordinating role in reviewing and developing our information. Our information service provides a range of 12+ printed products relating to lung cancer and digital content on our website. We distributed over 49,000 printed items in 2024 with our main orders coming from Lung Cancer Nurse, Cancer Information Centres but also providing a direct supply to people affected by a diagnosis.

You will be working as part of the Lung Cancer Information and Support team, with staff based mainly in our Glasgow office but regularly working with colleagues in our Liverpool head office.

Title:  Lung Cancer Information Officer
Responsible To: Director of Patient Information and Support / Director of Communications and Engagement
Salary:  £22,000 – £26,000 (based on experience)          
Location: Glasgow office base (1-2 days a week) and home working
Hours: 28 – 34 hours per week (to be negotiated)

About the role

You will require attention to detail and interest in writing and reviewing health information. You will be the key contact with our voluntary Medical Advisory Panel and Reader Panel (composed of patients and carers) who will advise and co-create information products that map lung cancer diagnosis, treatment and its impact on those affected in the UK. You will work closely with the LCISS and Marketing teams to ensure information is evidence based, needs led and reaches its target audiences.

Overall Objectives

  • To provide access to patient centred, evidence-based information for those affected by lung cancer.
  • To engage people affected by lung cancer in a range of ways in planning and delivering our services.
  • To develop our digital information and links with online cancer information providers.
  • Increase access to our information materials through effective partnership with the NHS, charities, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain compliance with quality and monitoring systems, leading on the implementation of the PIF Tick information standard.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and produce new information materials including booklets, factsheets and digital content.
  • Produce and review our relevant information products of value for people affected by lung cancer.
  • Support the development of the Reader Panel to ensure it includes people with relevant experience of lung cancer and its treatments.
  • Support the Administrative Officer in managing supply and maintaining lead time for stock refresh/ reprints.
  • Act as the point of contact with freelance editor, photographers and graphic designer commissioned to support resource development.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders, particularly NHS staff, to encourage access to our information products.
  • Ensure information sources are up to date, linked to evidence and undertaking reviews in line with treatment changes.
  • Develop relationships with the clinical community who contribute to the development and peer review of materials, specifically via our Expert Panel.
  • Identify information needs and gaps in provision for services users and create patient led materials.
  • Support the Director in communicating with potential sponsors and reporting to sponsors.
  • Work with colleagues across the charity to promote access to services and maximise their usefulness to people affected by lung cancer.

Key Knowledge, Education and Experience

  • Ability to produce high quality, evidence based consumer focused materials.
  • Knowledge and confidence in using IT systems to produce and monitor work.
  • Skills in editing and producing leaflets and web contents.
  • Understanding of the NHS in the UK, with experience of working within a voluntary or health care setting.
  • Ability to produce professional reports and presentations.
  • Understanding and/ or experience of producing information, marketing or consumer focused services.
  • Experience of working with clients and/ or volunteers.
  • Experience and knowledge about managing data using proprietary or in house systems.
  • Knowledge of quality monitoring systems.
  • Experience of monitoring internal/ external environments to ensure workplans reflect and adapt to current issues and priorities.
