Donna’s fundraising story

View all Fundraising Stories

This Saturday, a group of friends from Worcestershire are taking their fundraising to 13,000 ft and will be completing a tandem skydive in memory of their friend, Wayne Meddings, who sadly passed away from lung cancer in November 2021.

Donna Scarrott, who has organised the group’s fundraising event, shared their reasons for skydiving – “Wayne was a lovable rogue who was always up for a laugh. He had a kind heart and would do anything for anyone.

“The Ambassador Club in Evesham, owned by Timothy Williams, has always done a lot of fundraising for a variety of charities. So, when we returned from our annual trip to Blackpool in August last year, Wayne, Emily and I started discussing doing a sky dive for charity. We were all up for it and had planned to do it at some point in 2022.

“However, a few short months later, Wayne found himself with a diagnosis of lung cancer and sadly passed away in November. This is the reason why we have chosen the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation as our charity – to support their awareness raising to help people get an earlier diagnosis.”

Donna continued: “We’ll be taking to the skies at Hinton Skydiving Centre in Brackley. The centre has agreed to let us release some of Wayne’s ashes, at his mum and sister’s request. This way Wayne will still be a big part of day, and still get to be with us for the skydive, just as we planned.

“We aimed to raise £750, and we’ve absolutely smashed that target with the help and support of our friends, family and the team at The Ambassador Club.”

Donna has previously completed a skydive in 2018, but it will be a first for the rest of the team – Emily, Timothy and Gavin.

“Despite this being my second time, I am still incredibly nervous – yet excited! There is nothing quite like the adrenaline rush you get whilst sitting in the ledge ready to free fall.

“Wayne meant so much to all of us and we are doing this for him!

When it’s all over, we will be able to raise a glass in his name – this is for you Meds!”
