GLCC Journalist of the Year award

The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is proud to belong to the Global Lung Cancer Coalition (GLCC). The coalition is a worldwide alliance of 35 non-government organisations from 24 countries.

These organisations represent patients, carers and healthcare professionals. In the UK, three organisations represent the GLCC. They are the British Lung Foundation, the National Lung Cancer Forum for Nurses and Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

Each year, GLCC members present an award for Excellence in Journalism on the subject of lung cancer. Every participating country selects its own winner.

2015 UK Winner Announced

We are delighted to announce that the 2015 GLCC UK Award goes to Victoria Herd from Potters Bar.

Victoria received the nomination for her courage and dedication. She created a unique awareness campaign in memory of her mother, Janice Leverett. Janice died from lung cancer in March 2014.

The Red Lipstick Selfie Campaign

Janice always faced the world wearing her trademark red lipstick. Because of this, the image inspired Victoria to launch her ‘Red Lipstick Selfie’ social media campaign.

The digital campaign quickly gained momentum. As a result, Victoria shared her mother’s story with millions of people across the world. At the same time, she helped spread an important lung cancer awareness message.

Recognition from the UK GLCC

Presenting the award on behalf of the UK GLCC member organisations, Paula Chadwick, Chief Executive of Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, said:

“Some may argue that Victoria’s campaign is not journalism in its most traditional sense – but we say, on the contrary, she has simply used the most modern and effective way of telling a very human story and getting an absolutely vital message out there to the world at large.

“That makes sense to us, and we are proud and delighted to make the award for 2015 to Victoria, with our deepest thanks and our warmest congratulations”.

Award Ceremony at BAFTA

Victoria accepted the award at the annual Cut Films Awards ceremony. The event took place at BAFTA in Piccadilly.

Cut Films is a charity that educates young people about the dangers of tobacco products. Today, the organisation forms part of Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. It now sits within the charity’s Education and Prevention directorate.
