Mike Hayler just loves to run… and he’s never put off by a hill. The Isle of Man provides plenty of scenic routes to challenge him and the Millennium Way, approximately 28 miles in length, is a particular favourite.
He was recently inspired to run our Retro Running series IOM in memory of his cousin Lewis who sadly passed away three years ago from lung cancer.
Mike, 49, commented: “I love running, Laxey to Snaefell and back a favourite route, a nice coffee to finish, but I have many favourite Island routes. When I ran the Retro Running Series I wanted to think of Lewey and the times we shared in our late teens – so, happy and sad memories.
He continued: “I really enjoy it – it’s one of the best ways to boost both your physical and mental health. Providing an outlet for stress relief it can also improve your mood and overall happiness. And I like the medal bling you can win – that is great of course!”
A biomedical scientist, Mike’s work involves processing samples in histology at the pathology lab at Noble’s Hospital.
Mike comments: “I have become acutely aware of a rise in the number of lung biopsies we receive in the lab. I decided to support the charity in memory of Lewis and also for this reason – more awareness of this disease and encouraging people to come forward with early signs is really important.”
Originally from North Harrow, London, Mike enjoys Island life regularly running with the Manx Fell Runners, weekly with Let’s Run Isle of Man group, and takes on triathlon challenges too with the ‘M.A.D. Tri Group’.
Mike concluded: “I will continue to support the work of Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation IOM and the important service they provide to Island patients. My wife enjoys a charity ball so if there is one of them planned for the future we’ll be there too!”
