Fundraiser Peter Knowles has raised over £10,000 for Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation through a gruelling series of hikes covering more than 450 miles.
Peter started supporting the charity after his wife Wendy Knowles passed away from lung cancer in April 2009, just over two years after being diagnosed with the illness.
Despite not being a regular hiker, Peter decided to ask friends and family to sponsor him to climb all 214 fells in the Lake District known collectively as The Wainwrights.
Peter has now climbed 167 of the famous hills and mountains over the course of 74 hikes, and raised in excess of an incredible £10,400 in sponsorship.
Peter plans to continue fundraising until he has climbed all of The Wainwrights in Wendy’s memory.
Wendy drew much comfort and inspiration from the staff at Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation – they were always helpful and supportive.
Peter was happy Wendy had so much support from our charity
She felt that not only were they focused on raising money for an unsung cause but they actually cared. Raising money to help them continue their work feels like a fitting way to remember Wendy.
People have been amazingly supportive since I started fundraising, and a friend or family member always accompanies me on the walks. Other hikers often stop to talk to me about what I’m doing, and many give sponsorship money there and then. It’s really heart-warming how generous people can be.”
